What is your Next Chapter?

Show Notes

Today my special guest is Adrian Laurentiu who comes to us all the way from Uganda, Africa. He is the Country Operations Manager for the NGO Wells of Life and has committed his life to public service of humanity. Although Adrian is from Romania and has Bachelor degree in Music and a Masters degree in International Relations and Diplomacy and is currently working on a PhD African Political Geography, Adrian’s primary desire in life is to serve humanity in Africa.

So today’s question is why does Adrian give up the chances of a potentially lucrative career in International Relations to work in Africa for a low paying non-profit?

Today I plan on doing another solosode with Producer Paul on a subject I wrote on a blog a few months ago, which was titled “The Thrill of Not Knowing.” The ever increasing popular speaker and writer Jordan Petersen once asked the question “What is your friend: the things you know, or the things you don't know?”

I really like that question because I so strongly believe that it is “what I don’t know” that keeps fulfilled. I am an explorer, a wanderer, and an experimenter.

So you can see why I so resonate with Jordan Peterson’s quote above. My greatest friend is indeed “what I don’t know.”

I wonder, is this true for you as well? I have a feeling that curiosity and discovery are embedded in our DNA as human beings. How else can you explain the exponential growth in technology, the sciences and even the arts as we venture into that “galaxy far, far away”?

And then we have the all too familiar dialogue that opens the Star Trek series:

Space, the final frontier
These are the voyagers of the Starship Enterprise
Its five years mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life
And new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before

Wow. The very statement gives me Goosebumps. And it has been true for just about as long as mankind has been around. As a species, we are wanderers and explorers seeking out strange new worlds.

So let’s bring in Producer Paul to talk a bit about this stuff.

Today we are in for a treat with my special guest Peter Ashworth. Bear with me as his introduction requires a bit more time than normal. That’s because Peter is far from normal.

Peter Ashworth is a 30-year veteran of creating companies and organizations. He is highly inspired every day to help others. He is currently the CEO and Founder of Live Possible | Fearless Life, an organization that helps people live their greatest potential.

Now this is really cool. Peter has just recently launched The Fearless Life Program, for those suffering from the debilitating effects of anxiety. As someone who has experienced this level of anxiety personally, I’m gonna be most interested in discovering more about Peter’s new program.

Did you know that Anxiety Disorders affect the lives of one in five people in North America? Peter’s Fearless Life program is a new, science-based, guided approach to killing anxiety. Fearless Life incorporates the amazing new breakthrough science of neuroplasticity, which we will talk about later.

Peter is also an Executive and Mindset Coach, which we will discover more in the show. An interesting note is that Peter played a role in the founding of Wells of Life, the charity that I am so deeply involved with.

Finally, Peter is a husband, father of 2 highly accomplished college-athletes, a fitness nut, an outdoor adventurer, and an artist.

So… before we run out of time why don’t we get Peter on the mic as we discuss, among other things, personal life design and strategies you might use to create your Next Chapter.

Today Producer Paul and I are going to discuss the value and frustrations with deep friendships. I am finding in our new world of busyness and “friendship technology” like Facebook, etc. that many of us are finding ourselves without that old fashioned idea of deep and supportive relationships.

Oh, many of us have plenty of colleagues and acquaintances, but the resolve to have deep and supportive friendships is waning. I wonder what is going on. Are deep friendships even a value any more? Or are we satisfied with lesser-committed friendships in lieu of an increase in a bit more superficial relationships.

Let’s see what Paul has to add to this notion.

Lindon writes of his personal passion when he says, “For me, life is about helping people take ownership of their realities and set paths forward to uncover the greatest joys possible.  There is simply nothing more satisfying than watching an individual dig deep inside themselves and uncover truths they didn’t realize existed.”

One of the tools Lindon is expert with is called Emotional Intelligence, or commonly referred to as EQ (not IQ, EQ). Today I plan to get deep into EQ and more.

My guest today is our regular friend, Terry Hershey.

Today Terry and I plan to chat about what Carl Yung calls the Shadow Side of our personalities, often referred to as the Dark Side. Given my personality I happen to have a mild love affair with my Dark Side, which is often not so acceptable by the norm.

So let get on with our conversation on a subject very dear to me.

Zig Ziglar once said, “There is a certain amount of dissatisfaction that goes with knowing your time, talent and abilities are not being properly used.”

You know I think I am a perpetually dissatisfied person. Partially that is because I am a dreamer and I regularly have ideas of new things to try. That has been my MO for most of my life. I like that. It leads to new activities and new ways of thinking.

So, what do you say we get this genuine conversation started? I say “genuine conversation” because so much is unscripted. I just want to see how it goes. So, let’s go…

My special guest today is becoming a regular on the show, perhaps because he is my personal life coach. I have to admit that I have learned as much from Dena as I have from any friend, coach or therapist. She truly is full of genius.

As you may or may not know I recently returned from one-month Uganda meeting with government officials and creating a Sanitation and Hygiene program for people in rural villages. (You can find out all about this on podcast #81 on Poverty.)

Today I want to talk to Dena about Archetypes and the unconscious and how that combination impacts every single thing we do.

It’s good to be home from Africa… I think. My body thinks it is 2:00 in the morning so I’m a bit brain dead. But that isn’t about to stop me from discussing some of my observations from Uganda in 2018.

The thing I’d like to focus on today is Poverty. Why is it that people that live in homes win dirt floors, no electricity, no running water, no access to clean drinking water, and dressed in tattered clothing seem to have a semblance of contentment where as people in the US suffer from depression, addictions, and suicide?

That is the conversation I’d like to have today.

Divorce can cause many problems.  But perhaps the least understood is "parental alienation" as children blame their parents for splitting up the family and refuse to speak to them. Or one parent poisons the children against the other spouse, leading to years of separation, anger and resentment. That's the topic today as Charlie speaks with a well known expert on this subject.

As a board member for the charity WELLS OF LIFE, Charlie is off again to Africa to oversee the well spring of support for this organization and their simple work of drilling wells for people without clean water.  Until he returns, here's a look back at what that incredible organization and its founder, Nick Jordan, and what they are doing to make a difference in the daily lives of so many villagers.

Stay tuned to hear more about their mission when Charlie returns!

Charlie is in Uganda with Wells of Life again. So stay tuned for some more updates and up-to-date reports. But while he's gone, here's another look (and listen) at one of his best where he examines some of life's basic questions.

Listen as host Charlie Hedges and his guest Terry Hershey delve into the mystery of "character" and whether it's a disappearing virtue in today's character driven society and "reality show" reality.

This week I intend the topic of core beliefs and how they evolve over a lifetime.

For example, when a person begins skiing, at any age, the slope provides a giant masterpiece to be explored and experimented with. After time, we find our paths and routes that we most enjoy and so we begin to use them more often.

Before long our skiing experience begins to be limited to the grooves of the path we have laid and son that path becomes a rut which is quite difficult alter.

Now take that example and consider that I have discovered that over the years we have lived the more ruts we have developed in which often there is little room for creativity and change. As a result our lives become comfortable and predictable, when all along there resides deep within a little imp pleading for change and new ways. Some hear that voice and some don’t.

I have read that is why retired people are attracted as a means of learning new ways of life and seeing people in other cultures. Their comfort zone is no longer quite as comfortable. Many of us long for something new and something exciting.

But my question is, why wait for retirement? What if we were to attempt to broaden the scope of our lives to include adventuring into areas that were once unacceptable and even taboo? What if we were to experiment with other belief systems, other cultural styles of life, new activities, and a generally open mind to accept beliefs and ways of life that challenge our personal status quos?

Today… I want to discuss a most disheartening subject. That is mental illness and homelessness in Orange County, and I want to give special attention to the recent events in Santa Ana. You see, until recently several hundred homeless people were living in the Santa Ana riverbed until the county forcefully removed them with no plan of restoration or providing temporary housing. And one of the results is that hundreds of homeless people have begun moving to the main streets of Santa Ana, hugely impacting business and tourism.

My guest today is my good friend Cynthia Sitton who is an especially experienced in this troubling chain of events. Her delightful art studio in downtown Santa Ana has become unwelcome and even frightful to anyone desiring to visit her amazing studio located in an area with a vigorous goal of rebuilding an inviting and professional art community.

Her knowledge of the subject of homelessness is vast as, for more than a decade, Cynthia has attempted to manage the life of her very severely schizophrenic daughter living homelessly and addicted to drugs.

Today we are honored to have with us from Sardinia, Italy Elena Perella, founder of Sentidu, which is an original life coaching process she developed after years of study and personal experience.

Elena says that since she was a child she has been very sensitive to other people's suffering, which awakened an interest in human behavior, that later became a real passion.

She received a Master’s degree from The Netherlands, in Latin American Studies with a focus on Literature and Cultural Anthropology. Her study helped her to better understand the reasons and dynamics that cause people to act as they do.

Her work in international environments reinforced her natural openness to people from diverse backgrounds and beliefs, and fine-tune her abilities to understand people's emotions and be receptive to them.

Elena then decided to move back to Sardinia, Italy, where she went on to further shape her own business, Sentidu Life Coaching.

To wrap up this introduction I’d like to read Elena’s description of her work:

“In creating Sentidu my life experiences were fundamental because it is from those experiences that I relate to my clients. I suffered from a severe depression, eating disorders and I was also a victim of domestic abuse. By coaching myself throughout them, I changed my life and felt inspired to support people who are ready and eager to learn about themselves.”

With that said let’s move on to Elena Perella.

Today we are going to discuss a newer movement that I am seeing in our society today, especially with Millennials and, oddly enough, retiring Baby Boomers. I’m observing that movement as one going from the American ideal of Making Money to one that is more concerned with Making a Difference. I’m calling this show, From Money to Meaning.

My guest today is Mike Olsen. Mike was a successful Civil/Structural Engineer and Project Lead at an engineering firm when he decided earlier this year to accept to a full time role as Operations Manager of the non-profit, Wells of Life. This new job requires ten hours each day in addition to work on the weekends. And he did this all for a significant reduction in salary.

So I wonder… what in the world drives the Mike Olsen’s of the world to make such a decision

Listen in on the show to discover some fascinating alternative lifestyle choices.

You can reach Mike Olsen at mike@wellsoflife.org
