What is your Next Chapter?

Mar 30, 2017

Today I’m visiting with Nick Jordan, Founder, Wells of Life, Inc. a group that is committed to bringing clean water to 1,000 communities in Uganda and beyond. Nick believes in combining business and philanthropy that allows him to inspire others to make a lasting difference in the world. As we will discover, Nick Jordan is a perfect example of what Bob Buford called moving “From Success to Significance.”

Born, raised and educated in Ireland, Nick holds a bachelor’s degree from University College, Dublin.

After fundraising for schools in Uganda in 2008 Nick witnessed overwhelming poverty and lack of clean water. In 2009, he founded Wells of Life to begin bringing clean water, beginning with work in Uganda.

My guest today is Sanford Coggins, president of VisionWise Capital, a company primarily focused on how investing in commercial real estate (not so overly focused on stocks and bonds) can support your dreams. VisionWise Capital controls $51M of real estate assets since its start-up in 2013.

Check out some of Sanford’s impressive credentials:

Sanford has a unique background as a Commercial Real Estate Broker/Principal, with 25 years as a Wealth Advisor. He worked for 16 years as Vice President, Wealth Management Advisory at Merrill Lynch, where he managed over $100M in client assets. In addition, Sanford co-developed a three-year $77M pilot project to create financial opportunities for ethnically diverse communities.

Sanford earned Merrill Lynch’s Lifetime Achievement Award for leadership and excellence. But most important to me, he was a quarterback at UT (the University of Texas at Austin) on a four-year scholarship.

Today I want to chat with Sanford about a couple of things. One has to do with Sanford’s willingness to risk leaving a successful and established career at Merrill Lynch and then moving on to His Next Chapter of Entrepreneurship. And Second, we plan to explore rethinking the way we invest our savings. I may also want to hit on the touchy subject of the state of savings and investments among Baby Boomers.

Taryn Vogt is a repeat guest who once again excites us with her insight. It’s funny that she was in town the week after Terry Hershey and I discussed in new book, Trust Fall. We talk a lot about

Today’s episode is a continuation and expansion of a recent podcast with Terry Hershey in which we discussed Taryn’s new book, Trust Fall. Since Taryn is so rarely available and is currently staying in the Orange County area, I took the opportunity to convince her to come to the studio.

I must say that Taryn has impacted my life in significant ways in the last year or so. In fact, I began this project The Next Chapter following Taryn’s prompting. And it has meant the world to me. I love it.

Today I want to pick Taryn’s most unusual brain on Feeling Magic in the Moment.

I have to say this may be my favorite podcast ever. My guest, Terry Hershey, and I go totally off script and have a genuine conversation about what it means to live apart from the script given to us by family and society. It’s about Changing the Rules of YOUR Game of Life.

Today we plan to offer a new way of determining the activities of your life. I’d like to Change the Rules of the Game by following the prompting of your heart, as you diminish the negative feedback you receive from your head and other people.

Much of today’s conversation will be based on Taryn Voget’s new book, Trust Fall: A story about learning to trust life, love ourselves, and redefine success. This little 126-page book made me think, a lot.

In this podcast we discuss:

  • Following your heart often requires you to “change the rules off the game.”
  • The “game” is the script given to you by others. And it can take decades to dismiss that script, if ever!
  • What does it mean to love yourself?
  • Why “trusting ourselves” is so vital yet do difficult.
  • Why do we buy into the “script” given to us by others then “blame” ourselves for failing?
  • Following your heart is about being fully human, regaining what we have lost in the shuffle, when life has been relegated to keeping score. To be human is to cultivate the good life and gardening your soul.
  • When we honor numbers over people there is something wrong in our soul.
  • How do you follow your heart when following your heart impacts the lives of significant people in your life?

My special guest today is Dan McNerney, a former government lawyer and retired judge that has created a whole new life of meaning, adventure and awe for himself. Dan is an usually gifted man. Not only did he reach the top of his profession he is now returning to, among several other things, a life of playing music professionally. Something he once did in college for beer money, he now does out of love.

Dan is special, and unusual, in that he prior to retiring, he developed a plan for his future that would allow him to immerse himself in creative activities such as writing, art, and music. And by doing so, he has begun to fulfill his dreams that got put on hold during his years of raising a family and pursuing a career in public service.

Today… Dan performs country music in local clubs, is writing a novel, and spends as much time possible in their second home in the mountains of Oregon, where his talents as a handyman are put to full use. Dan devotes his life keeping busy doing things he loves and helps other people.

Dan is my kind of guy. I can't wait to chat with him for a while.
